GitHub is the code-hosting platform behind GitHub Copilot and, for this directory, its coding agent — the autonomous workflow where you assign a GitHub issue to Copilot and it spins up a cloud environment, writes and tests the code, and opens a pull request for review. Founded in 2008 and acquired by Microsoft for $7.5B in 2018, GitHub sits at the center of where the world’s developers already work.

Copilot has grown into one of the most widely used AI coding products — reported at around 50M users in 2026 — and its agent has moved from inline suggestions in 2021 to autonomous multi-file editing and issue-to-PR automation, with an Autonomous Agent Mode for enterprise teams rolling out from mid-2026. It is deliberately model-agnostic, letting developers choose among models from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others.

Organizationally, GitHub is no longer a standalone unit: after CEO Thomas Dohmke’s departure at the end of 2025, GitHub was folded into Microsoft’s CoreAI group, with its leadership reporting into Microsoft rather than a dedicated GitHub CEO. Its advantage remains distribution — Copilot lives inside the GitHub and VS Code workflows that hundreds of millions of developers already use.
